Semi-Annuals Are Here!

Ahh, this time of the year is like Christmas for some of us…the sales are THE BEST that they’re ever going to be and if you’re a savvy shopper you can score some major deals. A lot of brands are advertising sales at this particular time of the month but take a closer look at their actual sales. The stores that are giving an extra % off are where you are going to make out like a bandit. Right now LOFT is taking an extra 40% off their sale items, Saks is in the middle of their consolidation sale and Anthropologie just added 300 “fresh cuts” to their sale racks.

I think a great way to stay within budget during this time of sale frenzy is to really be on the lookout for specific pieces that you need for your wardrobe – pieces that are classic and will last into next fall/winter. It’s pointless to purchase a trendy, faddish item at a great price and never end up wearing it. Sales can be luring, wooing you to buy, but try to stay focused on the task at hand – classic pieces at a killer price.

Steal a Deal this January

Ahhhh… we can finally all breathe and once again see our carpeting that was hidden underneath crumpled wrapping paper, tinsel and empty cardboard boxes. Our houses are back to normal, decorations are down, put away and yes, we have survived another lovely holiday season with family and friends.

And just when you thought you could NEVER shop again, yes, the time has come! These next two or three weeks offer us, as consumers, irresistible deals wherever you look. If you are in a mall or driving past a store you will now start seeing flashy signs such as “semi-annual clearance”, “take an extra 50% off” and my favorite, “3 days only sale starts NOW”. All of these translate to, “PLEASE come into our stores and help us clear out our winter merchandise that’s left over so that we can bust out our spring 2012 lines”. This means big savings for us!

Some things to ponder if you decide to take these stores up on their offers over the next few weeks:

 – If you are purchasing an item in a store that says, ” take an additional 40% or 50% off your total purchase”, make sure that’s exactly what the cashier does for you.  Sometimes, the register does not automatically take the reductions off of the prices and you are left wondering how much you really saved. My advice? Do some quick math before you get to the register and figure out approximately what your total will be. If your items ring up for more, challenge the cashier and more than likely he or she will adjust for you.

 – When strolling through the aisle of your favorite clothing store, look for items that are classic, not trendy. If you are buying a “faddish” item at the end of its season, chances are it will be totally out of style by next winter. Then you are not even saving money, you are wasting money! So skip that pair of skinny jeans…wide leg jeans/trousers are totally in for spring/summer 2011. My advice? Go for the more traditional pieces that can be mixed and matched for years to come.  Think cardigans, corduroys, black pants, boyfriend blazers…items that can make endless outfits if paired correctly.

Some sales that I think are worth the trip: Banana Republic, LOFT, The Gap, Talbots, J Crew…so many others, but that should keep us all busy for a while! I visited Banana, LOFT and The Gap today and got some pretty amazing items for UNDER $10. Uhm, yes – ridiculous!

Happy shopping 🙂

Christmas in September

If you’re like me, your closet isn’t exactly big enough to hold all of your summer and winter clothes. So every April and every September we go through the tedious task of switching over our seasonal wardrobes.  (Unless you have the privilege of living in San Diego where it’s 75 degrees year-round! Yes, we hate you all and are insanely jealous of the perfect hair weather you get to enjoy day in and day out!)  Sorry, I digressed. Ok back to the changing of the guards.  This can be a daunting job for sure but doing this early in the season can actually save you some money down the road. I make it a practice to go through my fall/winter clothes right after Labor Day…even if it’s still warm and sunny outside. It gives me a chance to check out what I still have from last fall and a few falls ago.  I often shriek with delight when I see an item that I forgot about or a fabulous steal that I purchased at the end of the season that I stored away and havent worn yet. I hold it up in the mirror and try it on…it is exactly what I wanted! Yes, it is just like Christmas! Only you bought this present for yourself! As I sit and relish in my new, warmer, fuzzier clothes this week I am actually saving money and time. Many of us go right out and start shopping in August for the newest fall must-haves and spend a fortune on items that we may already own or have something extremely similar to. By going through your wardrobe BEFORE you go shopping you can assess your arsenal and then purchase the pieces that you really feel you need.  Like those gray suede booties you are salivating over…

Here’s a gorgeous pair from Banana Republic that just might be worth the splurg…after all, it’s Christmas. 🙂

Timing is EVERYTHING!

I was reminded today that yes, in the world of fashion and retail, timing is so important. I never (ok, rarely) go shopping unless I know that a particular store is having a savings event. I make an effort to sign up for email alerts from my favorite clothing stores so that I know exactly when they are doing a 30% off or a buy one-get one sale. The end of July and August are particularly excellent times to find the steals from the recent summer season. Many retailers are promoting up to 40% sale items…that’s huge savings for us! It’s such a great time to find those end of summer deals, wear them once or twice more and then have them fresh and ready to go for next summer. This is where is pays to look for a staple piece that can be worn again and again rather than a trendy style that you will look at next summer and ask yourself, “why in the world did I buy this?”

One of my favorite stores, LOFT, is running a 40% off all sale items today…who knows how long it will last… http://www.anntaylorloft.com/catalog/department.jsp?N=1200042&categoryId=3364&loc=TN

Just to give you all a little incentive (like you needed one) I ran over to the LOFT this morning and purchased a silk dress for under $10…yes, that’s $10 as in 10 $1 bills. When I find a steal like that my heart literally starts pounding as I realize that I have just scored – bigtime. So go ahead and seek out that steal today…its waiting for you! 🙂
