Semi-Annuals Are Here!

Ahh, this time of the year is like Christmas for some of us…the sales are THE BEST that they’re ever going to be and if you’re a savvy shopper you can score some major deals. A lot of brands are advertising sales at this particular time of the month but take a closer look at their actual sales. The stores that are giving an extra % off are where you are going to make out like a bandit. Right now LOFT is taking an extra 40% off their sale items, Saks is in the middle of their consolidation sale and Anthropologie just added 300 “fresh cuts” to their sale racks.

I think a great way to stay within budget during this time of sale frenzy is to really be on the lookout for specific pieces that you need for your wardrobe – pieces that are classic and will last into next fall/winter. It’s pointless to purchase a trendy, faddish item at a great price and never end up wearing it. Sales can be luring, wooing you to buy, but try to stay focused on the task at hand – classic pieces at a killer price.

2013 Trend Alert – Which is Right for You?

Happy New Year! This is always an exciting time for stylists as it screams new and fresh on the fashion front. What is everyone wearing for spring? What are the hot colors? What textures and fabrics are top of the list? It can be a bit daunting to try and navigate your way through the newest trends and then have to figure out which you can actually pull off – so…..to help out a bit we have collected some top trends for 2013 and some pretty fun ways to incorporate them into your everyday wardrobe. Lets trend it!

1. Metallics

I think metallics are such a great way to dress up any outfit, but this spring they are stealing the scene in casual wear, check out these sneakers from Asos shoes that will add some bling to any outfit:

If this isn’t really your “speed”, try adding a metallic as another accessory to your outfit – like a cool Michael Kors clutch or some fab nail polish seen here:

2. Greens

The green palette is making quite a statement this season – shades ranging from mint to emerald are being spotted everywhere. Women with darker hair look stunning in a more jeweled-toned shade, these dresses from Michael Kors, Vera Wang and Reem Acra hit the mark:

Shades of Green

For an option that is a little more affordable, here’s a sweet dress from LOFT that won’t break the bank at about $80 or accessorize with this bubble necklace from J. Crew for $70:

Sleeveless Crepe Dress    J.Crew Bubble 18-karat gold-plated resin necklace

3. Bold Stripes

Ok, these guys are EVERYWHERE and I couldn’t be happier! I absolutely adore stripes! They scream nautical, classy, timeless and effortless to me. I think this trend could be my fave for this season. If you are full-figured then stay away from horizontal stripes as they could make you appear larger – opt for diagonal or vertical stripes which are instantly slimming. If you have a boyish body type then horizontal stripes could give you the illusion on curves – so go for it! I love stripes on skirts, camis, tees, blouses and blazers. They can be equally as eye-catching on smaller accessories like scarves and bags, too, though. Here are some great options from Banana Republic to choose from:

This diagonal striped tee is only $39.50

Striped skirt $89.50

The ultimate striped trench for $198 – major!

Dont be afraid of multi-colored stripes either…this little number is from Anthropologie for $148

Lauri Dress

4. Lace

This trend can be so, so feminine and chic but can quickly cross over to racy and risqué pretty quickly. A tip for keeping it classy –  if the lace is of a sheer texture then underlay it with an appropriate cami, it will look positively Grace Kelly-ish and leave a little to the imagination!

Loving this cardigan from Banana, drooling over this lace cuff from Stella & Dot for $98 and this lace skirt from Jolie Moi for $29:

So what’s your favorite trend for the season? Which will you be sporting this spring? Remember, make the trend work for your personal style, no need to wear something  just because its “on trend” – make sure you love it and have fun with it!

FNO at NYC

I had such a blast last night traveling around to different stores and hotels, it was like one big fashion party throughout the city. Here are some pics from some stores around Times Square…the sales were great, the food was fab, the gift bags were cute and the store associates were so helpful and happy. Some items that we continue to see for the fall: colored denim, classic trenches, military looks and lots of gold. The shots below are from LOFT, The Gap and Sephora. I also attended a full-figured fashion show at the Yotel which was super fun – hey, the girls from Jerseylicious were there 🙂

And, of course, one of my purchases from FNO was an absolute STEAL. These amazing laced heels were $100 and I stole bought them for $26. I admit, not my usual $4.77 deal but a nice one, none the less.

If you didn’t get a chance to get in on Fashion Night Out don’t worry – most of the clothes are still waiting for you at the store – waiting for you to pick them up for fall! 🙂

It PAY$ to be PATIENT

I had been eyeing this olive and brown sweater/blazer from the LOFT for months…literally. I would visit their website an obscene amount of times – always checking on it – $118.00 at full price, making sure it was still there, making sure it was waiting for me. I was like a cheetah ready to pounce on her prey. Then the moment of action came – I received THE email. The email that said all sweaters were on sale for $12.88. I knew I had to act fast and I did. I headed over to my favorite LOFT (the one that always has the largest sale area) and my heart was pounding heavily. I stared blankly at the rows of sweaters – all of them a mere $12.88. I shook my head, “don’t get distracted, ” I commanded. I had to go in for the kill.

Immediately I started thumbing through racks, searching for the infamous sweater. The search became more frantic, more hurried as the sweat began to form on my forehead. (It always seems hotter in the sale aisles, no?) Could I have lost it? Could someone else have bought my sweater? The very thought of it made me race through the racks faster.  Then I saw it. (And the choir-like music played in my head) One olive and brown striped cardigan/blazer left, and it was in my size…it was mine – all mine.

As I quickly brought my findings up to the register I could hardly keep a straight face. I had stalked this sweater for a while now thinking about how it would look with this great pair of jeans I had. My patience had paid off; I knew I was not going to pay $118.00 for this item nor did I think it was even worth that much. However, I gambled that it would still be available and I would be able to purchase it for a fair price. Uh, yes I would call $12.88 fair 🙂 It was a risk I was willing to take and I won! Not only did I bring home this fab sweater but I also found a few other deals that were too good to resist. These items, full price were over $400.00 all together…I paid $44.00 for them all! A great day for me and my wardrobe!

This little experience made me realize that if I could be that patient for a sweater, I should be as patient, no – more patient in other areas of my life. I’m reminded of a verse that says, “let patience have her perfect work in you.” (Yes, patience is a “she”) The reward of my highly discounted frock brought such happiness to me, how much more joy could I experience in my life if I let patience guide it?  Food for thought…while you are flipping through racks at the LOFT to find your perfectly perfect sweater. 🙂

Steal a Deal this January

Ahhhh… we can finally all breathe and once again see our carpeting that was hidden underneath crumpled wrapping paper, tinsel and empty cardboard boxes. Our houses are back to normal, decorations are down, put away and yes, we have survived another lovely holiday season with family and friends.

And just when you thought you could NEVER shop again, yes, the time has come! These next two or three weeks offer us, as consumers, irresistible deals wherever you look. If you are in a mall or driving past a store you will now start seeing flashy signs such as “semi-annual clearance”, “take an extra 50% off” and my favorite, “3 days only sale starts NOW”. All of these translate to, “PLEASE come into our stores and help us clear out our winter merchandise that’s left over so that we can bust out our spring 2012 lines”. This means big savings for us!

Some things to ponder if you decide to take these stores up on their offers over the next few weeks:

 – If you are purchasing an item in a store that says, ” take an additional 40% or 50% off your total purchase”, make sure that’s exactly what the cashier does for you.  Sometimes, the register does not automatically take the reductions off of the prices and you are left wondering how much you really saved. My advice? Do some quick math before you get to the register and figure out approximately what your total will be. If your items ring up for more, challenge the cashier and more than likely he or she will adjust for you.

 – When strolling through the aisle of your favorite clothing store, look for items that are classic, not trendy. If you are buying a “faddish” item at the end of its season, chances are it will be totally out of style by next winter. Then you are not even saving money, you are wasting money! So skip that pair of skinny jeans…wide leg jeans/trousers are totally in for spring/summer 2011. My advice? Go for the more traditional pieces that can be mixed and matched for years to come.  Think cardigans, corduroys, black pants, boyfriend blazers…items that can make endless outfits if paired correctly.

Some sales that I think are worth the trip: Banana Republic, LOFT, The Gap, Talbots, J Crew…so many others, but that should keep us all busy for a while! I visited Banana, LOFT and The Gap today and got some pretty amazing items for UNDER $10. Uhm, yes – ridiculous!

Happy shopping 🙂

Spring Wardrobe: Veruca Salt would be pleased

Unfortunately, each new season I want a new wardrobe. Instead of allowing myself to become a modern day Veruca Salt, wanting things and wanting them NOW, I usually wait until later in the season when everything starts to go on sale. But, with a little internet scouring I’ve found a some things that don’t require you to hold your breath for a mid-season mega sale. All five pieces are under $50, and several of them have multi-season use.

1) For just $29 you might be able to get these sandals in gold AND coral (and black too!). I love that they’re a bit dressier than flip-flops, but still super casual. I imagine I’ll be donning these with quite a few dresses between now and next Fall.

2) A dress from Target? Yes! It’s twenty bucks AND can serve as both a basic dress (add a sweater for chilly early Spring days) & a bathing suit cover-up in the Summer.

3) This LOFT dress is less than $50 when you apply the additional 40% off that LOFT is currently offering, and it’s a perfect Easter/Spring wedding piece!

4) OH MY GOODNESS. I adore the orange and violet combo Madwell has going on with this scarf!

5) I adore this super feminine tank/tee from Old Navy, and at $14.50 I may end up getting more than one color!

Happy Spring!
